Average Joe Vs. Superhero

Can an Average Joe become a Superhero?  This question was answered yesterday in a new comic strip written by Brad Chaffee (Enemy Of Debt) and produced by Fred and Jeremy of Credit Card Daily fame.  The story involved a debt laden young man who was trying to figure out how to get out of debt.  The Average Joe was helped by the wisdom of Dave Ramsey and J.D. Roth, and supported by his friend Brad Tuttle.  The Average Joe figured out that delivering pizzas was a great way to get out of debt.  I’m sure you can see who the Average Joe really is.   With the help of his D.E.B.T. (Debt Eliminator Banking Terminal) which is doubles as a radio/GPS for his Hummer, our superhero is able to blast away his debt and deliver the best pizza in town.

If you haven’t guessed it by now, I’m the Average Joe.  Here’s the link to the PF Comic Strip #6.  Check it out; I’m sure you’ll like it.  There are other comics as well, just follow the links on the Comic Strip post.

WOW!!

Wow is about the only way I can describe the post the Brad wrote yesterday about the comic strip.  Please click over and read it Check Out The PF Comics, DeliverAwayDebt Revealed, it was one of the nicest things anyone has ever said about me and my mission to get out of debt.  My wife even had a tear in her eye as she read it last night.  She’s knows I have made many good friends this past year and that I do my best to provide for our family, as well as provide inspiration for others getting out of debt.  Until she read the post she never put all the pieces together at the same time.  All I can say is thank you Brad.  You have been one of my inspirations during this journey, so I guess it’s a great thing that two debt ass kickers have come together.

Time.com

Not only did the Average Joe get featured in a comic strip, he also was included in a post on Time.com.  That’s pretty big time.  In the comic, one of my friends was Brad Tuttle a writer for Time.com.  He included a funny write up of the comic in his blog yesterday titled I Apparently Have Personal Finance SuperPowers.  Brad is the main money writer for Time.com and offers up great advice daily.

The Rest of The Story

The story is not complete yet.  I’m still in debt.  I still work over 12 hours every day.  I still only sleep 4 hours a night.  And I still love my family with all my heart.  I’m here to prove that getting out of debt can be done.  I didn’t just start with a little bit of debt; I started with over $100,000 to pay back.  That’s a huge mountain to overcome, but anybody can do it.

You can get out of debt anytime you’d like.  It takes; planning, sacrifice, and hard work, but it can be done.  My biggest complaints about the world we live in today are all the people who say our goals are impossible.  People walk around and look for the easy way out, weight loss and money are the first items that come to my mind.  There isn’t an easy way.  If there was, we’d all be thin and rich and I just don’t see many thin rich people in my neck of the woods.

You Can Do It

Writing this reminds me of a post I read this morning from a blogger named Johnny B. Truant.  Johnny is a brash, no non-sense person who calls it like he sees it (I even had the chance to meet Johnny a few weeks ago at a book signing for Chris Guillebeau).  He just wrote a post called The Badass Project.  The project is something he’s been thinking about doing for a long time and has great potential, but the main reason I’m writing about it are the people he calls Badass.

The examples in the post are people who’ve overcome handicaps and are living life to the fullest.  People who don’t take “No” for an answer, and people who have the mentality that they can do anything.  Johnny is a much better storyteller than I am so please click over to read about these Heroes among us.  It’s amazing.  (WARNING: if you can’t handle the f-bomb then don’t read his post, remember I said he was brash)

Your Turn

This post hops around a bit but I want you to realize that there is a Superhero in each of us.  Take a few minutes and think about it.  Step outside your body and look at yourself from an outsider’s perspective.  Are you the hero you should be?  Are you the hero you could be?  Are you a hero to your family?  Are you a hero to the community?

You are already a hero to me; you are reading this blog because you are looking for advice/help/tips on destroying your debt.  That makes you a hero to me.  It’s time to step up and make the important things in life happen.

Taking extra jobs sucks, but it’s a sacrifice that must be made if you want to get out of debt. When I’m working far too many hours in a week, I usually know that you’re floating around in Michigan somewhere working just as much (but probably more) than me, so I had better quit my whining.

Oh yeah, how did you like that photo of my family in that post? (Wife, Isaac and Noah at sunset)

I thought it was appropriate since what you’re doing is for your family. :)

You are getting some well deserved press! The comic looks fantastic but I am not sure the wife would really be into the full body lycra suit they have you in lol

Your achievements are totally awesome. I see why Brad picked you as the Average Joe “super hero.” I can’t say that I sleep only 4 hours (I really need a solid 8!), but I put in my10 hour work days. I could do more so maybe I really need to step it up a bit. I know that this holiday season I’m not just going to sit around, this year I intend to take on some side jobs while on winter break. Your story definitely encourages me to do so. Keep the inspiration coming!

You tell your wife that what you BOTH are doing is so stinking incredible and what you’re achieving with your hard work will come back tenfold. You embody what this country so desperately needs, stepping up to take care of your family, your financial responsibilities, and securing for your own future without waiting for a hand-out or step up from the government or some other body. Your passion for this will translate into great success in the career that it is obviously leading you into. Not to mention the legacy you are building for your children! That is priceless. The sleep you are losing today will help you rest easy tomorrow. :)
